Boy, 9, dead after UTV collides on with SUV on rural Alberta highway

A nine-year-old boy is dead and a teenager in hospital after the utility task vehicle (UTV) they were driving collided with an SUV in rural Alberta on Thursday night.

A nine-year-old boy is dead and a teenager in hospital after the utility task vehicle (UTV) they were driving collided with an SUV in rural Alberta on Thursday night.

Airdrie RCMP said Friday that they were called to an accident at the intersection of Highway 575 and Range Road 264 — which is about 60 kilometres northeast of Calgary — around 6 p.m. on Thursday.

A preliminary investigation showed that the UTV, also called a side-by-side, was travelling southbound on Range Road 264 when it entered Highway 575 and struck an eastbound SUV, the Mounties said.

One of the occupants of the side-by side, a 14-year-old boy, suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries and was flown by STARS air ambulance to a Calgary hospital.

The nine-year-old boy was declared deceased at the scene.

According to RCMP, both are from Rocky View County.

The 29-year-old man who was driving the SUV from Kneehill County had no injuries.

The Acme Fire Department, EMS and Kneehill County Bylaw assisted at the scene, about six kilometres west of Acme. An RCMP collision analyst attended to assist in the investigation.

RCMP said the name of the deceased will not be released and no further updates are anticipated.
