A Calgary cyclist was hit by a train near the SAIT LRT station late Thursday afternoon.

Police believe the cyclist ignored the lights and bells, dodging around the level crossing arm at 14th Avenue and 14th Street N.W.

He was knocked off his bike and landed 12 meters away, police said.

The 29-year-old was taken to Foothills hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Trains were delayed and traffic disrupted while EMS crews were at the scene.

Officials did not release the man's name.
