Male cyclist critically injured after incident east of Dead Man's Flats on Highway 1
STARS called to airlift man to Foothills Hospital, EMS says
A male cyclist is in life-threatening condition after an incident on Highway 1, STARS air ambulance confirmed.
EMS responded to a call around 11:38 a.m. on Thursday that a man had been injured about 15 kilometres east of Dead Man's Flats.
The cyclist, a 74-year-old Canmore resident, hit his head on the road when he appeared to lose control of his bicycle and fell, RCMP said in a statement on Thursday afternoon.
A loaded trailer was attached to the bicycle.
Numerous people witnessed the incident and attempted to help the man until paramedics arrived.
STARS was called to the scene and EMS confirmed to CBC News that the cyclist was likely airlifted to the Foothills Hospital in Calgary.
Though roads were dry, the RCMP said that conditions were windy, and the man did not appear to be wearing a helmet.
RCMP confirmed that the incident closed eastbound lanes of Highway 1 at Exit 105, but the lanes have since reopened. Drivers are warned that they should still expect delays due to high traffic volume.
RCMP said the incident is still under investigation.
