Donations will be accepted on Saturday, February 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Multi-coloured formal dresses hang on clothing racks.
Dresses of all styles and colours were available to teen shoppers at a past Gowns for Grads event. (Gowns for Grads)

CBC Calgary is holding a donation drive in support of Gowns for Grads — a program that travels to communities in Alberta, providing free dresses and suits for grade 12 students. Help us collect formal wear for teens in need.

Event details

Donations will be collected for one day only on Saturday, Feb.17 with Angela Knight at CBC Calgary1000 Veterans Place NW, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Please drive up to the station and a member of our team will be available to collect your donation from your car.

What items are we collecting?

  • Formal dresses
  • Formal suits
  • Clear tote bins with lids

For all items, gently used or new is preferred – in good condition and fairly clean.

Why are donations needed?

Louise Higginbottom, one of the Gowns for Grads organizers, had her trailer stolen recently. It was packed with over 500 gowns and 100 suits – donations that had been collected for students who may be facing financial stress. The theft significantly impacts the program's inventory, which could take a couple years to rebuild. There are teens who require the support of this program, and would otherwise be unable to participate in their graduation celebration.

We hear about a small-town theft of hundreds of gowns meant to be donated to graduating high school students. We speak with one of the organizers of Gowns for Grads.
