Sweets, Lights and Fireworks. On Diwali, we have new beginnings. Celebrating the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance, Diwali is one of the happiest festivals. Join CBC Calgary at the Calgary Public Library this October for an immersive experience of Diwali, the festival of lights - both Instrumental Stories and Stories in Motion will feature Indian artists.

Instrumental Stories: Tabla Tales with Sujeev Chohan

Get to know the Tabla, an Indian percussion instrument. Sujeev will introduce the basics of Tabla, guiding listeners through exploring the fundamental "bols" and techniques that make up this North Indian percussion instrument. He will share insights into the essential rhythmic patterns, or "taals" and explore rhythm cycles commonly employed in both solo performances and as accompaniment in Indian Classical music.
About the Artist:
As a dedicated student of Indian Classical and Western Classical music, Sujeev Chohan has been immersed in music from an early age. At age four, he studied piano; Celebrating at ten, he expanded his musical repertoire by taking up the Tabla. Over the years, Sujeev has performed on many prestigious stages, including performances at Arts Commons, TEDxYYC, and as a member of the World Music Ensemble at the University of Calgary.
Stories in Motion: Garba folk dancing with Kajal Dattani

Join us to learn the Garba, a folk form that originates from Gujarat. Many traditional garbas are performed around a centrally lit lamp, a picture or a statue of the Hindu goddess Durga. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced dancer, this workshop is designed to immerse you in the artistry of traditional Indian dance.
About the Artist:
Our instructor is Kajal Dattani from Kala Bhavan of Calgary, Calgary's premiere Indian dance school teaching Bharatanatyam, fusion & traditional folk dances of India. Kajal began her Bharatanatyam training with Kala Bhavan of Calgary in 2000. An instructor at Kala Bhavan since 2015, Kajal enjoys choreographing folk, fusion and contemporary pieces, and collaborating with various artists across Calgary.
