The province has announced the completion of some upgrades for Alberta's Castle Wilderness parks.

Improvements to the pair of new parks include more than 180 refurbished campsites and new picnic tables, an improved day-use area at Butcher's Lake and four new comfort cabins at Beaver Mines Lake.

This is the first part of a four-year, $20-million plan to improve recreation opportunities in Castle Provincial Park and Castle Wildland Provincial Park.

Other projects underway include new day-use shelters and rustic camp sites that can hold RVs. Backcountry trails for cross-country skiing, mountain biking, snowshoeing and horseback riding are also under review.

The protected area is 103,000 hectares in southwestern Alberta.
