Anyone in the city can pay $40 a year to become a member, which allows them to borrow all sorts of home and garden equipment. The organizer says she came up with the idea after becoming a homeowner.

"Just to put it into perspective, you could rent from a retail store a power washer for $50 for the day or you could get a membership and have access to all the tools here," said Courtney Hare. "From your really expensive ones like a rototiller or a power washer or a hedge trimmer to even your inexpensive ones that you might not have — a hammer, a drill — so we have them all. The big expensive ones are really helpful for people."

The tool library is based at the Bridgeland-Riverside Community Association.

Volunteers will also be on hand to give advice about the tools and equipment.
