Residents in the northeast Calgary community of Taradale were surprised to find their mailboxes wide open on Thursday night — and they're not happy about it.

The first report to Canada Post customer service that a community mailbox near Tararidge Close N.E. was left open came in at 6:04 p.m. M.T.

Canada Post dispatched staff to take care of it, and it was inspected and closed by 8 p.m.

A second call about the same mailbox came in at 8:56 p.m. Staff were sent out within the hour to inspect and close the mailbox, and Calgary police were called.

Canada Post says it appears no mail was missing or tampered with, even thought the mail was left unsecured.

Some residents say they are worried their mail or parcels may have been taken.

Calgary police say there are currently no reports of mail theft, but if someone believes they were a victim they should file a report.

It's still unknown how the community mailbox came to be left open, but Canada Post says it does have a process to dispatch staff to secure the boxes as quickly as possible.

"We try to have our eyes and ears everywhere, there is a 24-hour national control centre that monitors all aspects of our operation to make sure the mail is secure," said Anick Losier with Canada Post

Canada Post says incidents like this are rare, and there is an internal investigation underway.

Losier says they will talk to the delivery person if there was anything suspicious or if someone forgot to turn the key properly.
