Stop vote splitting, anti-Harper group urges Calgary voters

With no clear front-runner in the federal election, some groups are urging Calgarians to vote strategically.

Signs that read "stop vote splitting" can be seen posted near election signs. They're calling for voters to support the candidate with the best chance of winning a seat over the incumbent.

"The best way of defeating Harper is with a thing called strategic voting," says Leslie Cramer with Vote Together.

"Rather than being discouraged and feeling like our vote doesn't count, we're trying to maximize the power of the vote because right now I feel voting is more important than ever before."

Political analysts say there are three ridings most likely to have strategic-voting — Calgary Centre, Calgary Confederation and Calgary Skyview.

"It's going to come down to a riding-by-riding basis," says Mount Royal University political scientist Lori Williams.

"The decision will depend on what the trend in that particular riding is. Strategic voting is going to be huge, and what voters are looking for is enough information to help make the decision for which candidate can defeat the conservative," she says.

"Unless it's clear who has the better chance, it's going to be a very difficult decision to make."

Williams also says it will be difficult for those voters who want to vote from the heart.
