Calgary to look at derelict gas stations
The city said hundreds of "brownfield" sites exist around Calgary, including one at a major intersection in the Marda Loop neighbourhood — a gas station torn down five years ago.
Rick Ciezki, Calgary's manager of environmental assessment and liabilities, said the sites could be turned into new businesses or green spaces if the right companies become involved.
"We'd like to have them redeveloped into something more positive that will help revitalize the community," Ciezki said.
"What we're looking at is just providing incentives for developers, and for owners and other stakeholders to want to do this."
The actual incentives still need to be worked out, Ciezki said.
Many Calgarians, however, are welcoming the idea of giving new life to empty spaces.
"I think it's ugly," said Charde Clark, who lives near the Marda Loop site.
"[This is] a really beautiful neighbourhood … everywhere else you go, and then you come here and you get this little corner that just doesn't fit with the neighbourhood."
The issue goes before city council on Monday.
