Calgary school board reverses bus fee decision
CBE said Tuesday it would raise transportation costs for parents to offset budget cuts
The Calgary Board of Education has put the brakes on raising bus fees.
On Tuesday, the CBE released a review of the provincial budget, saying that parents should expect to pay more for busing next fall. The move was meant to offset cuts to the school board's funding.
But Wednesday afternoon, the CBE announced that won't happen.
CBE spokesman Richard Peter says the significant transportation fee increase was worrying for parents.
"We thought rather than having our parents be concerned and calculating and worried about the future, we’d try to give them some comfort and now all of us can focus on kids in classrooms."
The board says it will look to administration costs to make up for the budget shortfall, but can't guarantee funding in classrooms won't be slashed next year.
