Calgary's first poet laureate was announced at a ceremony Monday at city hall.

Musician and writer Kris Demeanor was picked for the post from among six poets shortlisted by the Calgary Arts Development Authority.

Demeanor said a lot is already being done to nurture literature and poetry in the city and that he hopes to add to that.

"I definitely want to promote that by being a part of as many scenes as possible," he said.

Demeanor said he already has plans for his role as a cultural ambassador for the city.

"Part of my goal is to try and find fun, creative and interesting ways to get people into the enjoyment of language that aren't there yet," he said.

"From young people to recent immigrant communities to trying to solicit poetry from citizens."

He said having an official poet will enhance Calgary's role as Canada's cultural capital for 2012.

Demeanor's term lasts two years and comes with a total honorarium of $10,000.
