The death of a Calgary toddler in October of 2021 has been deemed a homicide and charges are pending against a man and a woman, police said Thursday.

Police and EMS responded to a call on Oct. 5, 2021, that a child was in medical distress at a home in the 2800 block of 14th Avenue S.E.

First responders found an unresponsive 18-month-old boy.

The toddler was pronounced deceased at the scene, police said. Officers questioned two adults.

Following an investigation that police called lengthy and complex, a man and a woman were taken into custody Thursday.

"Investigating the death of a child is incredibly difficult on all first responders and police officers," said Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta, with the homicide unit.

Police said further details and the identities of the suspects will not be released until charges are formally laid.
