Officer charged with assault in on-duty incident more than a year after altercation
Calgary Police Service says constable has been assigned to administrative duties
UPDATE: On Feb. 6, 2024, the Crown stayed Jameson Kooistra's assault charge.
A Calgary police officer has been charged with assault causing bodily harm in connection with an on-duty incident that occurred more than a year ago.
Const. Jameson Kooistra, 31, was charged by police and has been assigned to administrative duties. Police said his status will be reviewed as appropriate.
Kooistra has been a Calgary police officer for three years.
The incident occurred on June 17, 2021, after officers responded to a call for service in Temple. Officers apprehended a woman, who was taken into custody, police said.
During the incident, the woman sustained injuries due to use of force, police said. She was taken to hospital for treatment.
The Calgary police said they became aware that the woman died in September 2022.
Police said her death was non-criminal in nature, so they will not release any further details. They said her death was not a result of the physical injuries sustained during this incident.
Police said decisions about an officer's status during the court and disciplinary process are based on factors like risk to the public, procedural fairness and options available for modified duties.
