Calgary police have laid charges after a woman was fatally stabbed in the Beltline neighbourhood on Friday.

Michael John Adenyi, 26, has been charged with first-degree murder.

He is expected to appear in court on Monday.

Police said they were called to reports of an assault in the 100 block of 10th Avenue S.E. at approximately 6:40 a.m on Friday.

They said they found an injured woman in her 30s unconscious.

Despite the efforts of first responders, she died shortly after.
