Calgary MLA Jonathan Denis endorses Jim Prentice for PC Leader
Alberta Justice Minister Jonathan Denis said Sunday night he will not be seeking the leadership of the province's Progressive Conservative party, but is instead supporting Jim Prentice in his bid to lead the party.
The Calgary-Acadia MLA confirmed his intentions in a statement late Sunday evening. Denis said over the last few months, he's had many conversation with residents in his constituency about the future of Alberta.
"I am grateful for the support I have received to seek the leadership of the Progressive Conservative party," the statement reads. “I have decided that I will not be standing as a candidate in the 2014 Progressive Conservative leadership race."
Since being elected in 2008, Denis said he's offered a common sense, conservative approach as an MLA and as the Minister of Housing, Solicitor General, and Attorney General. He said his team has "heard from many Albertans who want a leader with a vision of smaller government, safer communities, and living within our means."
"I believe Jim Prentice shares this perspective I will be supporting him for leader of our party — and our next Premier," said Denis.
Denis is now in his second term as an MLA. He currently serves as Minister of Justice and Solicitor General.
