Man killed on railway tracks in Calgary's Edworthy Park on Sunday
CP Rail and Calgary police are investigating
A man was killed after being hit by a train in Calgary's Edworthy Park on Sunday.
Around 1:15 p.m. on April 17, a freight train made contact with an individual who was on the railway tracks in Calgary's Edworthy Park, Canadian Pacific Railway said in an emailed statement.
EMS were then called to the south of the Bow River, where a spokesperson said they found an adult male who was declared dead at the scene.
Neither EMS nor Calgary police could confirm whether the man was jogging or walking on the railway tracks at the time he was struck.
A train conductor and locomotive engineer who requested his name not be used for fear of reprisal from his employers told CBC News that the stretch of railway track where the man was killed is a particularly busy area.
He said that people often don't pay enough attention or realize how fast trains are moving.
"It's very nerve wracking to be approaching someone on or near the tracks because we don't always know what their intentions are or if they even realize we're approaching them despite us doing everything we can to make our presence known," he said.
The incident in Edworthy Park is currently under investigation by Canadian Pacific Railway police service and the Calgary Police Service.
