Calgary man in hospital after jolt from police Taser during break-in

A man who was shocked with a Taser by police during a break-in in southeast Calgary on Saturday remained in critical condition in hospital on Sunday.

A man who was shocked with a Taser by police during a break-in in southeast Calgary on Saturday remained in critical condition in hospital on Sunday.

Police were called to a home in the 500 block of 42nd Street S.E. at about 8 p.m. Saturday evening to investigate a report of a break-in in the area.

Officers arrested the man after finding him inside the home, said Staff Sgt. Keith Cain of Calgary police.

"EMS [emergency medical services] was called in because there was some difficulties following the arrest, and … [the man] was transported to the hospital," said Cain, who declined to say what type of force was used by the arresting officers.

A spokesperson at the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, which is investigating the incident, confirmed a stun gun was deployed.

More than 20 people have died in Canada after being stunned by Tasers.
