Police charge Calgary man with 2nd-degree murder in 2022 death
Police say new information from witnesses was crucial in laying the charge
Calgary police have charged a man with second-degree murder in the August 2022 death of 54-year-old Rhonda Waite.
During an investigation that spanned over two and a half years, police said witnesses continued to come forward with information about Waite's death. Earlier this month, investigators publicly deemed the death a homicide and renewed the plea for tips from the public.
The new information that generated resulted in police charging Gregg Stanley Dodge, 45, of Calgary with one count of second-degree murder.
Staff Sgt. Mark Rahn of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit thanked the witnesses who came forward.
"This information was crucial in laying the second-degree murder charge and ultimately allowed us to provide answers, justice and closure for Rhonda's family," he said.
Waite was found dead at an abandoned residence in the city's northeast neighbourhood of Crescent Heights on Aug. 20, 2022.
Police began investigating after they were called to the 200 block of 14th Avenue N.E. around 6:45 p.m. that evening, responding to reports of an unknown body found at the residence.
At the time, police said investigators believed the death was suspicious. It is believed Waite died several days before her body was discovered.
Dodge will appear in court Friday, March 14.
Police are continuing to ask anyone with information about the incident to contact them.
