Now that we're into fall, it's time to start thinking about raking the leaves in preparation for the first snowfall.

And to help keep yards free of debris, the city's leaf and pumpkin composting program is once again underway.

There are 35 drop-off points spread across all four quadrants of the city until Nov. 6, taking leaves and pumpkins.

Sod, branches, rocks and other waste is not accepted.

Calgarians are encouraged to use compostable paper bags rather than the plastic variety to collect their leaves.

Paper bags can be found at most home and garden stores.

According to city numbers, more than 2 million kilograms of organic waste is collected each year that would otherwise end up in one of three landfills.

The program is for residential yard waste only.

The Shepherd, Spyhill and East Calgary Landfills are open seven days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Nov. 1 then closed Sundays.
