The actions of employees from several northeast Calgary businesses helped to contain a number of suspicious fires that otherwise could have damaged nearby buildings on Wednesday, according to the Calgary Fire Department.

Just before 2:30 p.m., Calgary 911 started receiving calls about multiple spot fires near McKnight Boulevard and Edmonton Trail in northeast Calgary.

Those fires were in grassy areas and had the potential to damage nearby buildings if not caught quickly, the fire department said.

Employees from Fix Auto Calgary Coachworks North used a water hose to contain one of the fires, while employees from PartSource used store fire extinguishers to contain another.

Meanwhile, employees from Varsity Chrysler used a water truck and fire extinguishers to contain a third blaze.

The fire department said in a release there were five fires reported in the area, none of which were deemed accidental.

Fire crews arrived on scene and extinguished all the flames. The fires are now under investigation by the fire department and the Calgary police.

Those with any information, videos or photos are asked to contact the Calgary Fire Department.
