Calgary boy with rare disease inspires volunteers to 'give a kid a lift'
Money will help Calgary family install elevator in home
Easter Seals and some local businesses are planning to install an elevator in the home of a Calgary family whose child suffers from a disability resulting from a rare disease.
The Give a Kid a Lift fundraiser will help the Hitchcock family of Calgary install an elevator for their disabled son.
Caleb Hitchcock, who is about to turn six, was born with a rare brain condition called polymicrogyria. He is unable to walk or talk.
His father, Andy, says it is becoming more difficult for the family to care for Caleb as he grows and the elevator will aid greatly.
"He depends on us 100 per cent for his needs and we have to lift and move him wherever we go," he said.
The cost of installing a home elevator can be as much as $60,000. Several businesses are donating the equipment and the fundraiser will defray the extra costs associated with modifying the Hitchcock house to install the lift.
The Hitchcocks say this program has saved them from going into debt to care for their son.
"It just takes away the worry and added stress. We just feel so blessed," said Andy Hitchcock.
Organizers say they are hoping to expand the Give a Kid a Lift program beyond Calgary and are seeking businesses and volunteers to make that happen.
