Calgary Board of Education trustees vote for pay cut

Trustees with the Calgary Board of Education, which is facing a $62-million budget shortfall, have voted unanimously to take a 3.5 per cent pay cut.

The board agreed to cut the honorarium each receives to $45,000, a savings of more than $11,000.

Trustees also agreed to pay for their own parking at the CBE headquarters, which will save another $1,500.

The board is also cutting $5 million in administrative costs.

But Calgary's public school board says it will still have to make cuts as a result of the provincial budget released in March. 

The CBE says the budget's negative impact will be felt by students and their parents.

The budget will not be finalized until after it is debated by school trustees on May 28, but CBE officials say it will be up to school principals to decide where additional cuts can be made.
