Calaway Park closes on Victoria Day due to poor weather
High winds and rain created an unpleasant and potentially unsafe situation, park manager says
Calaway Park just hosted its grand opening for the season but was forced to close on Monday due to high winds and rain.
The amusement park just west of Calgary saw about 3,000 guests on its opening day Saturday but saw nearly an inch of snow in some parts of the park on Sunday.
Cold rain and high winds prompted the decision to shut it down for Victoria Day, said general manager Bob Williams.
"The May long weekend, at times, can be a little suspect but this year it really took the cake," he said, noting the weather would have made for both an unpleasant and potentially unsafe situation on some of the rides.
"The other thing we take into consideration is all those employees standing out in the rain."
Williams said the plan is to reopen the park next weekend, May 28-29.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of Calaway Park.
