There will be a federal byelection in Calgary Heritage this year, following the resignation of the MP who held the seat.

In October, Conservative MP Bob Benzen said he would resign his seat at the end of the year and return to private life. He vacated the seat Dec. 31, 2022.

In a news release, Elections Canada said the date of the byelection must be announced between Jan. 14 and July 2.

Elections Canada said the country's chief electoral officer has received official notice of the seat's vacancy, signaling the start of the byelection period.

The byelection must be held on a Monday, at least 36 days but not more than 50 days after the day the byelection is announced.

That means the earliest date for a byelection in Calgary Heritage is Feb. 20.
