Man dead after truck hits bus shelter, building in Calgary, police say
Driver taken to hospital, detained in police custody
A 42-year-old man was killed Sunday morning after a truck hit a bus shelter and building in southeast Calgary, police say.
Police are still trying to piece together many details about the fatal crash.
At 9:30 a.m., a truck was travelling northbound on 36 Street S.E. through the intersection at 17 Avenue S.E. in Forest Lawn.
Police believe the truck was driving on the sidewalk before it hit a nearby building and bus shelter — which killed a pedestrian who was inside or near the shelter.
Despite best efforts from EMS, including CPR, the man died at the scene. He was not taken to hospital.
Sgt. Colin Foster, who heads the collision reconstruction unit for the Calgary police, said the speed limit in the area is 50 km/h, and the driver was going "well above that." Foster added at this time it's too early to determine if alcohol or narcotics were a factor in the crash. He was also unable to confirm if the driver owned the vehicle.
The truck's driver — a man — was taken to hospital, as a precautionary measure, Foster said, and is believed to be the only one in the vehicle.
Police say the driver has been detained in police custody.
Mark Soliga, who lives near where the incident happened, woke up after his mom told him she heard a loud bang coming from the street.
He said there are a lot of collisions in the area, but this one is surprising, especially the aftermath.
"I would say the bus stop, it flew for a couple metres from its original place."
Roads are currently closed at the intersection of 17 Avenue and 36 Street S.E., as we investigate a traffic collision. Please avoid the area and use alternate routes. #yycroads pic.twitter.com/2hhR3EBwiW

Roads were closed at the intersection and are expected to remain closed for several hours while police are on-scene.
Foster said police are still working to determine the man's driving pattern prior to the collision.
