Burrows bids for mayor

Former Calgary Ald. Craig Burrows has officially announced his intention to replace Mayor Dave Bronconnier in the upcoming election.

Former Calgary Ald. Craig Burrows has officially announced his intention to replace Mayor Dave Bronconnier in the upcoming election.

During his Tuesday announcement, Burrows attacked the current city council for what he call reckless spending and dysfunctional behavior.

Burrows is the sixth person to enter the race for mayor.

The other candidates are Aldermen Ric McIver and Joe Connelly, as well as Jon Lord, Liberal MLA Kent Hehr and urban farming advocate Paul Hughes.

In the 2007 municipal election, Ward 6 unseated the incumbent Burrows in what was considered a surprise upset at the time.

In February of this year, Bronconnier said he will not be seeking re-election in the upcoming election.

Calgarians go to the polls to elect a new mayor and council on Oct. 18.
