19-year-old allegedly attacked grandmother with sword in Bragg Creek home
The woman is in serious but stable condition
RCMP say a 19-year-old southern Alberta man faces charges after attacking an elderly family member with a sword early Friday morning.
The victim called police from her home in Bragg Creek at around 12:45 a.m. Friday.
Police said the woman was in life-threatening condition when they arrived, but they were able to stabilize her and she was taken to hospital, where she remains in serious condition.
The suspect was taken into police custody.
CBC News has learned from neighbours that the young man is the victim's grandson, who also lives at the home.
"It's unusual, and what happened last night is shocking," said Cochrane RCMP Cpl. Troy Savinkoff in a press conference Friday afternoon.
Savinkoff said the teen makes weapons as a hobby.
The motive for the attack is still unknown. Savinkoff said investigators have spoken to the victim and that the suspect is being co-operative.
Bragg Creek is approximately 45 kilometres west of Calgary.
