Banff moves closer to paid parking

The town of Banff is looking into the possibility of implementing paid parking.

The town of Banff is looking into the possibility of implementing paid parking.

The resort town has long had a problem with parking congestion during peak holiday periods, and officials say it’s getting worse.

The hope is that people will find alternatives if they have to pay to park.

Resident Allan Buckingham supports the idea, as long as the town puts the money from parking fees into local transportation.

"It's important to have good public transit in town as well and my hope would be that a lot, if not all, funds from the parking go towards their own transit system and improving signage and things like that so people know where they can park and how to get around."

Paid parking is one of several ideas the town is considering as it develops a transportation strategy.

Residents voted against paid parking in a plebiscite 12 years ago.
