ASIRT reveals extent of injuries suffered by man at centre of Calgary police investigation
Arrest was caught on dashcam, resulting in suspension and desk duty for some police officers
Alberta's Serious Incident Response Team has revealed the extent of the injuries suffered by a man arrested by Calgary police, which later prompted an investigation.
The 34-year-old man suffered broken ribs and a collapsed lung.
Two Calgary officers have since been suspended with pay and two are on desk duty following the incident.
According to ASIRT, which is conducting the probe into the actions of police, the incident occurred on July 30 at approximately 8:50 p.m. when an officer attempted a traffic stop on a white SUV in a parking lot.
The driver fled police on foot and a short chase ensued. It was during that arrest, which was caught on a police dashcam, that the suspect suffered his injuries.
It was the footage that kickstarted the ASIRT investigation.
Calgary police only notified the media of the investigation last weekend.
When asked why it took almost a month to do so, deputy Calgary police chief Paul Cook said: "I believe it took several weeks before we were aware that the video existed."
ASIRT is also investigating the use of force by Calgary police in a commercial break-in in June, as well as a video that surfaced during the Stampede.
As well, ASIRT recently cleared a Calgary officer in the shooting of Anthony Heffernan in a Super 8 motel room.
