Severe thunderstorm warning hits Calgary area

A severe thunderstorm warning was put in place for the Calgary area and other parts of south and central Alberta, Environment Canada said in a release at about 6:15 p.m. MT.

A severe thunderstorm warning was put in place for the Calgary area and other parts of south and central Alberta, Environment Canada said in a release at about 6:15 p.m. MT.

"This thunderstorm is located about 40 km west/northwest of Calgary and is moving to the east/southeast at 30 km/h," the agency said.

"Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Large hail can damage property and cause injury."

Rainfall warnings are in effect for Fort McMurray and nearby communities.
