Alberta organizations get money to rebuild after flood
High River's Medicine Tree Manor to be rebuilt with larger rooms
Several Alberta organizations are receiving provincial money to help with flood recovery, including a High River seniors lodge damaged last June.
The Medicine Tree Manor will cost $9.9 million to rebuild, with the Alberta government providing $4.5 million and the Foothills Foundation, which owns the manor, covering the rest.
The lodge, built in 1960 with 52 units, will be demolished and replaced with a new building, expected to be completed in 2017, that will contain 40 larger units. The location is shared with Westwinds Lodge and The Parkside. All three lodges were flooded.
"Displaced seniors will be supported in other seniors’ facilities in the region or in government-supplied interim housing during the rebuild of Medicine Tree Manor. The repairs of the other two lodges will be co-ordinated with the construction of Medicine Tree Manor," provincial officials said in a release.
Non-profits get grant money
More provincial money is being handed out to assist the non-profit and voluntary sector with flood repairs not covered by insurance or disaster recovery programs. A total of $4 million is available.
Calgary organizations:
- Southern Alberta Hostelling Association: $242,100 for facility restoration costs.
- Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Centre Society: $200,000 for facility renovation and operational costs.
- Fresh Start Addictions Centre: $75,000 to offset costs associated with additional client services during the flood.
- Calgary Young Women’s Christian Association: $75,000 for redesigning staff positions.
- The Calgary Zoological Society: $75,000 for Calgary Zoo rebuilding costs.
High River organizations:
- Literacy for Life: $116,642 for operational costs and a flood book.
- Foothills Fetal Alcohol Society: $30,000 to redevelop and rebuild resources to support prevention and awareness programs.
- Foothills Special Needs Association for Parents and Siblings: $49,627 for programming costs and hiring a family support coordinator.
- High River Figure Skating Club: $749 for equipment damage.
- Rowan House Society Emergency Shelter: $75,000 for continued support to in-shelter residents.
