92 abused rabbits, hamsters rescued from Calgary house
2 people charged with neglect and causing unnecessary pain
Two people are facing charges after 92 rabbits and hamsters were seized from a southeast Calgary home last month.
- Exotic animals, rabbits seized from Bowness basement
- Rescued snakes put up for adoption by Calgary Humane Society
The Calgary Humane Society says the animals were living in cramped, unsanitary conditions and were suffering from medical neglect.
About a quarter of them had to be euthanized.
The couple are now facing 92 charges, including wilfully causing unnecessary pain and neglect for failing to provide adequate food and water.
“We are just thankful we were able to remove these animals from a very bad situation and there will be accountability for their suffering,” said cruelty investigations manager Brad Nichols in a release.
The society thanked the Calgary Police Service as well as the city's Animal and Bylaw Services for their help in with the investigation.
As a result of this incident, the society now has many rabbits available for adoption.
