9 new schools to be built in Calgary
Province unveils plan to construct the additional suburban classrooms by 2016
Calgarians will see several new schools built on the city’s fast growing outer edges, provincial officials announced Wednesday.
The nine new and replacement schools are planned for suburban communities in southeast, northwest and northeast Calgary.
The new schools will add about 7,550 student spaces and are expected to be ready for class by 2016, the province said.
"Calgary is a growing city and we need to ensure we build the schools today that Calgary will need in the future," said Education Minister Jeff Johnson.
The Redford government has pledged $503 million over three years for new schools in Alberta’s high-growth communities.
They will be built through a combination of public-private partnerships and traditional methods, the province said.
The new schools will feature advanced systems and features such as large windows that give natural lighting and ventilation systems to improve air quality and circulation, the province said.
A 10th new school was also announced for Davisburg, a community just south of Calgary. It will be a 600-student kindergarten to Grade 9 school operated by the Christ the Redeemer Separate Regional Division.
