Five residents along with their four cats will need to find temporary alternative accommodation after an early Sunday morning fire forced them out of their homes.

At approximately 2 a.m., the Calgary Fire Department was sent to the 200 block of Cranston Drive S.E., where they found large volumes of smoke and fire coming from a two-storey residential duplex.

Fire crews started an "aggressive attack" on the source home and placed hose lines to help prevent spread of the fire to surrounding homes.

Three residents and two cats from the source home, along with two residents and two cats from the attached home, evacuated before fire crews arrived.

All five will be displaced while repairs are made to their homes.

One resident reported complaints of smoke inhalation, while another suffered minor burns to their arm. Both received treatment.

A fire investigator was on scene working to determine the cause of the fire.

The Calgary Fire Department said the residents reported that they were alerted to the fire by their smoke alarm.

"Working smoke alarms help save lives," the department said in a release. "Smoke alarms should be installed, maintained and regularly tested on every level of your home."
