5 delicious Calgary food mash-ups
Julie Van Rosendaal hunts for tasty food hybrids
The popularity of the Cronut — part croissant, part doughnut — in New York City has brought about a resurgence of food mash-ups for surprising combinations that kind of work.
Here are five delicious hybrids to seek out around Calgary.
1. S’moresas at the Naaco Food Truck
This food truck's menu is being revamped for the 2013 summer season.
Hopefully it will still include s’moresas — s’more fillings of chocolate, marshmallow and graham crumbs tucked inside a samosa wrapper, fried and dusted with icing sugar. Divine while they’re still warm.

2. Butter Chicken Waffles at Mango Shiva
Think about it: butter chicken on waffles. If you thought rice did the trick, try scooping up that amazing sauce with a chunk of crisp, buttery waffle. Brunch will never be the same again.

3. Doughnut Sandwiches at Jelly Modern Doughnuts
You can get small sandwiches — think chicken salad, egg salad, Alberta roast beef or ham and cheese — stacked on an unglazed yeast-raised doughnut. Their selection varies daily, which is a good reason to keep going back.

4. Pulled Pork Eggs Benny at Blue Star Diner
It’s pulled pork! It’s eggs benny! It’s both mashed into one unbeatable breakfast at Blue Star Diner in Bridgeland.

5. Sumo at Tubby Dog
The Sumo is a hot dog, dressed up like sushi — topped with seasoned seaweed, Japanese mayo, wasabi, pickled ginger and toasted sesame seeds. Culinarily confusing, but delicious if you like that sort of thing.
