2 dead, 2 hurt in Calgary restaurant shooting

Two people were shot to death and two others were injured in a northeast Calgary restaurant early Sunday.

Two people were shot to death and two others were injured in a northeast Calgary restaurant early Sunday.

Police were called to the Food in East restaurant in the 4100 block of Marlborough Drive N.E. just before 4 a.m.

They said someone walked up to a table and started shooting, killing a man and a woman in their early 20s. They were found dead inside the restaurant, while two other men in their early 20s were wounded.

One man is in stable condition in hospital, while the other sustained minor injuries, said Calgary police Staff Sgt. Kevin Forsen in a news release. A fifth person sitting at their table was not hurt.

Investigators said they don’t know yet how many suspects are involved because they've received conflicting information.

The scene has been contained as about 30 officers, including ones from the gang unit, continue their investigation.

"Right now it appears to be very consistent with a targeted shooting that involves gangs, " said Forsen. "It was very sudden and there were no precursors that we know of."

He said the motive for the shooting is unclear.

Jean Tremblay, who lives near the strip mall where the restaurant is located, said he's not surprised at the violence. He said he's considering moving out of the area because of the rampant drug deals and vehicle break-ins.

It is the second major shooting this month in Calgary.

On Oct. 17, a gunman opened fire inside the Mirage Bar & Grill downtown, injuring five people, because he had been bumped by another man, police believe.
