Outdoor tips for winter hiking and camping enthusiasts
Experts say city folk sometimes have a 'false sense of security' when it comes to winter activities
Some people want to head out and enjoy nature at its finest even when it's cold outside.
In fact, B.C. Parks announced yesterday that Porteau Cove will accept reservations for its campgrounds, starting December 9th. There are 10 parks open for winter camping in B.C.
But experts say with temperatures dropping, outdoor enthusiasts need to be careful when packing for any outdoor excursion. This is especially key for those living in the southern part of the province.
"I think what happens in those South Coasters is there's that false sense of security when you're living in the city — everything is warm. Then you suddenly go up 20 minutes or 30 minutes later and you're in winter up there," said Kevin McPhail, a snowsports trainer at Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC).

Staying dry means staying warm
Layering is crucial, says Denis Begley, a camping products specialist at MEC. And don't forget to do that from head to toe, because even feet need layers to keep them dry. For instance, wool socks do a good job of insulating feet even when they get wet, he said. Gore-Tex gators will prevent them from getting wet at all, he added.
"Staying dry is imperative to staying warm," said Begley.
McPhail says people heading out into the backcountry this winter should pack at least the following things:
- Proper lighting.
- Signalling devices.
- Fire-starter kit.
- Extra clothing.
- Pocket knife.
- Shelter.
- First-aid kit.
- Navigation aids.
