Authorities and diving friends of a man who went missing in the waters off Whytecliff Park in West Vancouver resumed their search on Sunday.

The man in his 60s failed to surface after a dive in the area on Saturday evening. His diving partner called the Coast Guard. A search that night by the Coast Guard and Vancouver police marine squad was unsuccessful.

The missing man who is from the Lower Mainland is described as an experienced diver.

Diving instructor Mike Telford said the area is ideal for training because of a gradual transition. It's not unusual for people to dive at night with lights, he added.

"It's a safe area to dive in, but people have to keep in mind, you just have to stay within your own skill," he said.
