City of Vancouver crews worked late into the night to fix the latest water main break. Cold temperatures have put stress on many aging pipes in the ground.

On Saturday a 30-centimetre water main installed in 1976 broke and was fixed, but then broke again when workers restored water.

The new repairs took a long time because officials said it was tough to find the new break — and the line is located near an underground gas main.

"When there's a change in temperatures they are more apparent, they happen more frequently," said Daniel Roberge, director for water and sewers for the City of Vancouver.

Water had been completely cut off to a building at 1483 Lamey's Mill Road because the elevator shaft there was flooded.

Gordon Watson, a resident of the building, said water was restored by 11:30 p.m. PT. Residents of the 103-suite co-op checked up on each other during the outage, he said.

"We had people going up and down the stairs knocking on doors, checking on elderly people who were unable to get out of the apartment because the elevator was shut down," he explained.

The break did not hamper people getting to and from Granville Island.

On Dec. 4, parts of Robson Street were flooded when a water main broke near the Whole Foods.
