Victoria suspicious death linked to attempted suicide

The suspicious death of a woman in Victoria may be related to the attempted suicide of a man in a nearby suburb, CBC News has learned. 

The man who attempted suicide was under a court order to stay away from the now deceased woman.

Victoria Police have identified 46-year-old Mary Caitlin Walton as the woman whose body was found in a Queens Avenue duplex on Friday. 

Less than four hours earlier, the man who was renting the duplex, 51-year-old Daniel Blake Penney was found unconscious on a property he and Walton co-owned in Colwood, B.C.

Police found a man inside a car in a garage with the engine running and the doors shut.

Two police officers were able to pull the man out, but were overcome by the fumes. All three had to be taken to hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning. 

Penney survived, but Victoria police will not confirm whether he's under investigation for Walton's suspicious death.

Westshore RCMP Constable Alex Berube says his department is no longer involved.

"I cannot speak to the other investigation because the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crimes Unit is now involved with the investigation," he said.

Court records show Penney was charged with uttering threats at the home in Colwood and at the Hillside Seniors' Centre last month. 

The court ordered Penney not to have any contact with Walton and it also banned him from being in the home, but he was allowed to continue to use the attached garage for his small mechanics business.
