UNBC faculty say they will put up picket lines at 8 a.m. PT Thursday (B.C. Government)

Classes have been cancelled at the University of Northern British Columbia, as faculty will erect picket lines at 8 a.m. PT.

UNBC has been embroiled in contract negotiations for the last 10 months, but both sides remain far apart on how much professors should be paid, according to the UNBC faculty association.

"We've called attention to the really large and growing gap between compensation at UNBC and compensation at all other universities," said association president Jacqueline Holler.

Holler said the association regret the impact the strike will have on UNBC students.

"All of us faculty deeply regret the inconvenience to them and this decision was not taken lightly. It was taken after a great deal of deliberation, and frankly, some anguish among our members," Holler said.

Pickets will be stationed at all UNBC entrances. Downtown facilities, including the Wood Innovation and Design Centre, may be behind picket lines, said a release from the university.
