Ultralight plane crashes into waters off Crescent Beach
Pilot and passenger escape unharmed, while police, Transport Canada investigate cause
Two people escaped unharmed after the ultralight plane they were flying in crashed Sunday afternoon in the waters off a popular South Surrey beach.
Around 2:15 p.m. PT Surrey RCMP said they received several reports of the plane coming down in the waters off Crescent Beach.
Officers found the plane in the water near to the beach at the Christopherson Steps, which access that part of the waterfront.
"Both the pilot and passenger escaped without injury," said a release from Surrey RCMP. "They were both checked out by B.C. ambulance personnel and released at scene."
The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre and Transport Canada are now also investigating the crash.
Witnesses at the scene said they saw the plane avoid the rocks on the beach, but when the wheels of the aircraft hit the water, the plane tumbled over.
Surrey RCMP are asking anyone with information about the crash to call 604-599-0502 or, if they wish to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or www.solvecrime.ca.
