Transit referendum voter turnout rising south of the Fraser

Voter turnout continues to rise in the Metro Vancouver transit plebiscite, especially in municipalities south of the Fraser River, which saw a 72 per cent increase in ballots cast over the past week.

Overall, 21.8 per cent of registered voters in Metro Vancouver — or about one in five — have cast a ballot in the plebiscite to gauge support for a PST increase to fund transit improvements, according to new numbers from Elections BC.

The Township of Langley now has the highest voter turnout by percentage, with 28.4 per cent of eligible ballots returned.

Vancouver voters continue to dominate in sheer numbers, with 104,557 ballots returned, far beyond the next closest turnout in Surrey of 63,654 ballots.

CBC will update its interactive map weekly to reflect how many people in the 23 municipalities have been voting.

All ballots must be received by Elections BC by 8 p.m. PT on May 29, 2015 to count.

A majority of 50 per cent plus one will be considered decisive.
