Thieves target catalytic converters on Dodge trucks

The Langley RCMP is urging truck drivers to protect their vehicles after six very expensive catalytic converters were stolen over the last two weeks along the Langley-Surrey border.

Cpl. Holly Marks says a total of 40 thefts have been reported recently, mostly from Dodge 2500 and 3500 diesel trucks.

"We're not quite sure what has caused this part to become so popular, but they do run a cost between $3,000 and $4,000. And they're not secured to the vehicle by welding or anything like that. They're actually quite easy to take off."

The RCMP is recommending the usual precautions, including parking indoors or in a well-lit area, but also suggest that welding the catalytic converter to the truck might also deter potential thieves.
