A 17-year-old from Surrey is in custody facing drugs, weapons and flight-from-police charges after ramming a Vancouver police cruiser in the neighbourhood of West 13 Avenue and Ash Street Monday night.

Around 11 p.m. PT, VPD officers attempted to pull over a blue Acura sedan that was being driven erratically, but the driver took flight.

According to Const. Jason Doucette, police began to pursue the young man but quickly gave up due to public safety concerns of speeding through a residential neighbourhood.

A few minutes later, however, the suspect drove head-on into a police car. A second police car boxed in the driver from behind.

The suspect fled on foot but was discovered soon after hiding in a tree. He was apprehended with the help of a police dog and treated for a dog bite in hospital before being taken to jail.

One officer suffered minor injuries as a result of the collision.
