A 42-year-old man has been charged with second degree murder after a 55-year-old woman was stabbed to death in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside on Friday. Troy Leard Alsager will remain in police custody pending his next court date.

Investigators say the woman was stabbed around noon on Friday inside her apartment. She then fled out the front door of the building at 215 Princess Ave.

Neighbours described hearing loud, unsettling screams at the time and saw the woman lying on the street wearing no shoes or jacket while bleeding profusely.

Police say Alsager and the woman lived in separate suites in the building, and it is unclear whether they knew each other.

The killing is the twelfth homicide in the city this year.
