Sources food bank in Langley robbed 3 times in 3 days
'It was triple whammy quite frankly. It was just one thing after another,' said director Denise Darrell
The Sources Food Bank in Langley, B.C., is asking the public for help after thieves struck three times in less than three days.
"It was triple whammy quite frankly. It was just one thing after another," said director Denise Darrell.
The string of thefts began sometime late Wednesday or early Thursday, when thieves broke into the food bank and made off with $1,000 in gift cards.
Days later, they struck again and stole the one-tonne truck that the food bank uses to pick up and deliver food.
"On Saturday a community member called in and said he saw our truck out in Aldergrove. It had been abandoned there," said Darrell.
The truck is so damaged it could no longer be used to pick up and deliver food during one the food bank's busiest times of year. To make things worse, the bank's only other van recently broke down and had to be written off.
Then on Monday the food bank also learned the thieves racked up a $1,300 bill on the gas card inside the van.
"It's hard not to take this personally... Potentially you've stolen from your neighbours and friends and maybe your relatives," said Darrell.
The food bank says it's now had to rent both a truck and a van and it's appealing to the community help for help with the costs and for more donations.
Police are investigating, but have yet to say if both incidents are linked.
