Small dog stuck in stump rescued from hollow tree

A Yorkshire Terrier is lucky to be reunited with its owner after a harrowing experience requiring it to be rescued from a hollow tree stump in North Vancouver Monday afternoon. 

Joe Edwards was raking leaves outside his Capilano Road home when he saw something moving under the brush. 

"I just saw this critter down a hollow stump and then I realized it was a dog," said Joe Edwards. 

"It was shivering frantically, obviously distressed and cold. It didn't want anything to do with me. It wasn't snarly or anything, just suspicious and scared." 

The dog was too far down the stump for Edwards to be able to reach it. 

"I decided to get some freshly-done chicken out of the fridge and gave it a few pieces. It liked that but it wasn't interested in moving," said Edwards. 

The SPCA was closed on the Thanksgiving Monday holiday, so Edwards called the RCMP. 

An officer was able to loop a piece of rope, get it around the dog and gently pull it to safety. 

"The dog was obviously well taken care of because it was really clean. I'm guessing it was there for the day," said Edwards. 

An animal rescue officer was called to take the dog.  

It was picked up by its owner who is believed to be from out-of-town, Tuesday morning. 

No details have been released on how and why it ended up stuck in a dead tree.
