Port Coquitlam crews have finished working on a temporary patch for a sinkhole that closed an exit from the Lougheed Highway on Monday afternoon.

The sinkhole had closed the eastbound off-ramp from the Lougheed Highway to the Mary Hill Bypass.

The hole was caused by a break in a high-pressure water main, said Kristen Meersman, director of engineering and operations for Port Coquitlam.

Port Coquitlam was alerted to the problem last night at about 9:30 p.m. PT, when water was gushing from the road, she said.

"We immediately deployed our utilities crews to get to the bottom of the problem," she said.

A permanent fix will still be required, which will likely take several days of closures, she added.

Motorists will be notified in advance of that, and it may not occur until next week, said Meersman.
